Moving Beyond the Black Box
Signs of solidarity on social media are encouraging and appreciated as a Black run organization but it begs the question of understanding behind these posts.
If you are participating or unsure how to gain exposure please take a further, more, meaningful step to learn about the history and reasons behind racialized injustices.

1. PODCAST

In episode 241 of Shaun King’s the break down, listeners are invited into shaun’s space as he shares “four of the most powerful clips of his [Malcom X's] speeches and interviews.” Stating, “they are also painful, because they shouldn’t even be relevant anymore, but he literally could’ve said these things yesterday. Listen and learn.”


2. VIDEO

Mellody Hobson’s Ted Talk is a thoughtful speech in which she shares her experiences facing prejudice and how to combat racial inequities and microaggressions through a call of action to be brave, show courage, and be bold - speak up.


3. BOOK

Learning in a Burning House: Educational Inequity, Ideology, and (Dis)Integration by Sonya Douglass Horsford offers a historical look at inequities present within educational structures. Readers join the author as she explores systemic oppressors tracing back to the Brown vs. Board of Education impact in 1954 (only 66 years ago).



4. FIGURE SPOTLIGHT

Nic Stone author of award winning novel Dear Martin will be hosting Lives on her instagram from Mon, June 1st - Fri, Jun 5th with phenomenal special guests: Pete Forester, Jodi Picoult, Brendan Kiely, Tiffany Jewell and D. Watkins. Highly recommended, Stone’s novel holds a special place within the RLC community. Not only is she one of the Founder’s favourite-reads, the novel is incredibly validating and insightful of numerous perspectives.

5. SYSTEMIC ACTION

As Mellody Hobson said - be brave, show courage and be bold. Speak up and advocate for yourself or your black loved ones by emailing or calling those in positions of authority.


6. DONATE
